Each piece in decrease originates from an eight-foot sculpture I created for a previous work, itself based on a photograph of a corner of my apartment. I later cut this wall-like sculpture into smaller, more manageable pieces, with the intention to create something new. At the time I was reading about feminist economics and the concept of degrowth. This body of work marks the beginning of my ongoing interest in the potential for transformation of materialities that would otherwise be disregarded.
Decrease includes a series of analog photograms, both black and white and color, created using fragments of the original sculpture. It also features a set of studio photographs, where these sculptural elements were repurposed as props to construct a stage set. Made with previously cast-off materials, including expired photographic paper, these works embody the paradox of contemplating reduction while simultaneously creating something new.
